Fiesta San Pedro: Melaka's Portuguese Settlement Festival on 29 June

If you are near Melaka on the last weekend of June, head to the Portuguese Settlement in Ujong Pasir. Fiesta San Pedro, the Kristang community’s annual celebration of Saint Peter, patron saint of fishermen, runs for several days and reaches its peak on 29 June.

The festival has been running for more than 67 years. This year carries extra meaning. In 2025, Malaysia’s tourism ministry agreed to recognise Fiesta San Pedro as an intangible cultural heritage under the National Heritage Act, following an application lodged in 2022. This edition is the first since that agreement was publicly announced.

The celebration centres on Portuguese Square. On the main evening, the community gathers at the Chapel of Our Lady of Immaculate Conception for a service before processing through the settlement. At the shoreline, the priest blesses fishing boats decorated with religious icons, flags, and flowers. It is one of the more distinctive rituals you can witness in Melaka.

After the blessing, the atmosphere shifts. Branyo, the traditional Portuguese-Eurasian dance, draws both participants and visitors. The Port Sett Ukes ukulele group performs Kristang songs that mix warmth and humour. Other community groups carry the performances well into the evening.

Food stalls serving local and Portuguese-influenced dishes are set up around the square. The setting itself rewards a slow walk. Ujong Pasir is a quiet coastal enclave just south of the heritage core, with a different pace from Jonker Walk.

The Portuguese Settlement is a short rideshare ride from central Melaka. Plan to arrive in the evening for the best energy, and stay for the performances after the procession.
