Melaka River is getting a major second act. Phase 2 of the river cleanup and beautification project will add better waterfront access, new river cruise facilities and cleaner water along a long stretch of one of the city’s best-known sights.
The works cover 39 kilometres, from Jambatan Hang Jebat to Kampung Gadek. The main focus sits between Jambatan Hang Jebat and the Batu Hampar tidal control gate, with another six kilometres added upstream from the first phase.
For travellers, the headline is clear. This project will make the river easier and more enjoyable to explore. Plans include a pedestrian walkway along the riverbank, stronger embankment walls, river cruise upgrades and new water taxi stations. Existing bridges will also get a lift, with illuminated arch designs that should sharpen the river’s look after dark.
Cleaner water matters just as much as the new infrastructure. The project includes high-tech treatment systems at the River Water Treatment Plant in Kampung Enam, aimed at improving water quality in Sungai Melaka. That should strengthen the appeal of boat rides and riverfront walks, especially for visitors who want more than the usual heritage core around Jonker Street.
This is also one of the few developments in Melaka that blends function with leisure. It improves the city’s water supply for nearby users, while creating fresh reasons for visitors to spend more time by the river.
Phase 1 already proved the concept. It helped generate tourism income and introduced new visitor experiences. Phase 2 looks set to build on that success with a longer, cleaner and better connected river corridor.
If you are planning a Melaka trip, keep an eye on the river. The city’s next standout travel experience will not be inside a museum or a hotel lobby. It will be on the waterfront.
