Melaka has a new exhibition that deserves a stop if you like culture with a modern edge. The 2026 “Sea Silk Intersections, Creative Symbiosis” showcase brings together student design work inspired by Melaka’s maritime past, Peranakan culture and Nanyang architecture.
The exhibition runs from May 26 to 29 at the International Zheng He Institute. Entry is free, and the galleries open daily from 10am to 6pm. That makes it an easy add-on between Jonker Street, the Stadthuys and the city’s museum circuit.
What sets this show apart is its point of view. These are not dusty heritage displays. The works reframe familiar Melaka themes, Zheng He’s voyages, shophouse details, beadwork, dress, food culture and old craft, through graphic design, digital media, fashion and environmental art.
Expect a sharper, younger take on the city’s identity. The strongest pieces draw on Baba Nyonya style without turning it into cliché. They use colour, pattern and form with confidence, and show how Melaka’s mixed heritage still feels alive.
The exhibition also marks a deeper collaboration between the International Zheng He Institute and the School of Art and Design at Guangzhou Institute of Technology. Organisers signed a design authorisation agreement during the opening, with plans to develop more creative products based on Nyonya culture and to explore a Sea Silk creative research base in Melaka.
For travellers, that matters. It means Melaka is not only preserving its past, it is turning it into something current, useful and worth seeing now. This is exactly the kind of cultural event that gives the city more depth than a quick photo walk.
If your Melaka trip needs one indoor stop with substance, make it this one. Go for the visual energy, stay for the way it connects the port city’s old trading routes to a very modern design scene.
