Melaka is about to get easier to reach from Indonesia. Wings Air will resume direct flights between Melaka and Pekanbaru on June 10, with services three times a week through Melaka International Airport in Batu Berendam.

The schedule is simple and useful for short breaks. Flights will run on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays, which makes this route a smart fit for long weekends and quick city escapes.

For travellers from Pekanbaru, this cuts out the usual hassle of flying into Kuala Lumpur and sitting through a long road transfer. You land much closer to Melaka’s old quarter, riverfront and major hotels. That alone makes the route a real win for anyone who wants more time in the city and less time in transit.

This link also matters because Indonesian visitors already know Melaka well. State officials say about half the passengers on the route travel for healthcare, especially check-ups and treatment at the city’s private hospitals. For leisure travellers, that same confidence works in Melaka’s favour. It shows the city has strong services, good accommodation and a well-tested visitor network.

There is more good news for regional access. Officials also report strong demand for the Melaka-Singapore service operated by Scoot, with flights running at about 85 per cent capacity. That points to a broader shift, Melaka is becoming easier to enter directly, not just as a side trip from somewhere else.

If you are planning a visit, use the new route as an excuse to stay central. Base yourself near Banda Hilir for the Red Square area, museums and easy evening walks. Then add river cruises, Peranakan dining and Jonker Street after dark. A direct flight makes Melaka feel exactly as it should, compact, cultured and very easy to enjoy.
