If you are in Melaka this weekend, there is one more stop worth making before you head home. Festival Masakan Warisan Melaka and Melaka Heritage Festival 2026 runs through Sunday at the Independence Declaration Memorial (Memorial Pengisytiharan Kemerdekaan) in Banda Hilir.

What is on

The festival is organised by Perbadanan Muzium Melaka (PERZIM) and is now in its 16th edition, run as one of 220 events on the Melaka Tourism Calendar. Over three days, the programme brings together dance performances, martial arts demonstrations, traditional cooking demonstrations, and heritage games, with all seven of Melaka’s major ethnic groups taking part.

Four museums from outside the state have joined this year’s edition: Muzium Negara, Muzium Negeri Sembilan, Muzium Terengganu, and Muzium Perak. Village entrepreneurs, homestay operators, and local sponsors are also on site alongside Melaka’s own museums.

Why it matters for visitors

PERZIM is targeting around 10,000 visitors across the three days, and organisers say turnout on the first two days was strong, with both local families and international travellers joining the traditional games and cooking demonstrations. If you want a single afternoon that covers Melaka’s food heritage, craft traditions, and multi-ethnic culture in one place, this is it.

The Independence Declaration Memorial sits in Banda Hilir, an easy add-on if you are already visiting A Famosa Fort, Stadthuys, or the Maritime Museum, all a short walk away. It is also a good stop before or after a Melaka River Cruise.

Sunday is the last day, so this is a same-weekend plan rather than one to save for later. Pair it with a heritage weekend itinerary if you are building out the rest of your stay.
