Two weeks after the cultural launch of the Shuang Rao friendship boat, the riverfront becomes a race venue. The 41st Melaka International Dragon Boat Festival brings its competitive programme to Jeti Quayside on 27 and 28 June.
The races run along the Melaka River Cruise corridor through the UNESCO World Heritage zone, directly opposite Casa del Rio Hotel. You can stand close enough to hear the drum beat and feel the pace from both river banks or from the pedestrian bridges above.
Saturday 27 June opens with the 8km endurance race. It starts at 8:00am and runs until around 10:30am. One long stretch, one turn, and a demanding test for Open-category crews.
Sunday 28 June is the main event for spectators. From 8:00am to 4:30pm, teams race in 200-metre sprints across five categories: Open, Women, Mixed, Masters Open, and Corporate. More than 100 teams are entered this year, drawn from across Malaysia and abroad. The Opening Ceremony and Awards Presentation also fall on Sunday.
The riverbanks fill early on Sunday. The pedestrian bridges offer a higher viewpoint useful for photography. The waterfront cafés along the strip provide shade with a clear race sightline if you want to stay for several rounds.
Bring sunscreen, a hat, and an umbrella. Afternoon showers are common in June. Satay Celup stalls and Jonker Walk food vendors are a short walk from the race site when you need a break between races.
The broader Melaka River Festival runs through September with more river and beach events to follow.
