If you are in Melaka’s heritage core on 16 September, expect to share the street with a procession. More than 2,000 participants are expected for Keretapi Sarong, a free Malaysia Day cultural parade through Bandar Hilir.
Schedule and route
Participants gather from 7am at the Melaka Sultanate Palace Museum. The procession is scheduled to leave between 8 and 8.30am, covering about two kilometres to Taming Sari Tower.
The organiser has named cultural performances in front of Muzium Rakyat, around Stadthuys, and at other points along the way. No official turn-by-turn map has been published. Use this walking reference map to see the confirmed start, finish, and activity locations.
What to wear
The theme is traditional dress from each participant’s community, but full traditional attire is not required. A sarong is the essential idea: a kain pelikat, batik, or another suitable outfit all fit the occasion.
Part of a 10-year, nationwide tradition
Keretapi Sarong is marking its tenth year, with Melaka named as one of ten stations chosen nationwide for this year’s edition. The event supports Melaka’s Visit Melaka Year 2.0 push to draw visitors into the state’s heritage attractions.
Worth the detour if you are already in town
If your Melaka trip already has you based in the heritage core that day, this is a free spectacle worth building into your morning. Arrive before the 8 to 8.30am departure if you want to watch the start, then follow the route on foot toward Taming Sari Tower. Drivers should plan for slower traffic through Bandar Hilir during the procession.
