A big traditional arts production is landing in Melaka this week.
Muzikal Sri Gemalai: Fragmen Rakyat Johor is a dance musical that celebrates the culture of Johor. It plays for two days, 2 and 3 October, at Panggung Seri in the JKKN Melaka complex.
What to expect
The show brings together about 100 performers and musicians. Its music draws on Ghazal rhythms and Zapin ensemble playing, two styles with deep roots in Johor’s Malay traditions.
The story unfolds across five themed segments: heritage, life, identity, generations and the future. Organisers describe it as a production that adds fresh touches without letting go of traditional roots.
Times and tickets
- Evening shows: 2 and 3 October at 8.30pm, priced from RM30 to RM50.
- Matinee: 3 October at 3.30pm, priced at RM25.
- Where to book: tickets are sold through Ticket2u.
The matinee is the easiest slot for families or for anyone who wants to keep the evening free for a river stroll or dinner nearby.
Why it matters for visitors
The production is part of Panggung Seni Tradisional (Traditional Arts Theatre), a national series that ran only in Kuala Lumpur for 13 years. It reached Sabah and Sarawak last year. This year it expands to Negeri Sembilan and Melaka, so this is one of the first times the series has played the city.
