Kampung Morten

Attraction Kampung Morten Village streets are open residential space; Villa Sentosa and guided walks operate as scheduled visitor stops. Allow 1.5 hours

Kampung Morten is a living Malay heritage village beside the Melaka River, known for traditional houses, Villa Sentosa, and a close-up view of local residential heritage.

A Living Malay Heritage Village

Kampung Morten is a traditional Malay village on the banks of the Melaka River, surrounded by the modern city. It is a living residential community rather than a fully curated museum, which makes the visit valuable for travellers who want to see traditional Malay houses and neighbourhood life in context.

Villa Sentosa and Traditional Houses

Villa Sentosa is the village’s best-known visitor stop. The traditional house has been converted into a private living museum with household objects, personal collections, and details that show how a Malay home was arranged. Other houses and streets provide exterior views of raised timber homes, gabled roofs, planted courtyards, and later adaptations within the neighbourhood.

The village is also a useful viewpoint along the Melaka River. A walk can be combined with the river cruise, The Shore, or the historic centre, but visitors should remember that most doors belong to residents and are not public exhibits.

Visiting Respectfully

The village streets are open residential space rather than a timed museum. Villa Sentosa and organised cultural walks are scheduled visitor stops, while most homes remain private. Plan the visit around the heritage houses, riverfront setting and respectful exterior walk.

Allow about 90 minutes for a slow walk and a scheduled house visit. Late afternoon is comfortable for photography and pairs naturally with a riverfront itinerary. Wear walking shoes, avoid blocking driveways, and ask permission before photographing residents, private homes, ceremonies, or community activities.
