Melaka's Cruise Terminal Targets a Q1 2028 Start, With Berths for Six Ships at Once

The first jetty of the Melaka International Cruise Terminal is due to be finished by the end of 2027, with cruise operations starting in the first quarter of 2028.

Cruise ships are coming to Melaka, and there is now a date to mark.

The Melaka state government says the first jetty at the Melaka International Cruise Terminal should be finished by the end of 2027. Operations are expected to begin in the first quarter of 2028.

What has been confirmed

  • First jetty: an L-shaped structure, due for completion at the end of 2027.
  • Start of operations: the first quarter of 2028.
  • Capacity: up to six cruise ships can berth at the same time.
  • Facilities: international-standard passenger embarkation and immigration, customs and quarantine services.
  • Expected traffic: about 800 cruise ship arrivals a year, and roughly 1.6 million passengers.
  • Progress so far: 170 piles are in place, and a further 134 are still being driven in before the L-shaped jetty is assembled.

What it means for visitors

Today, a cruise stop in Melaka means a short day ashore. A dedicated terminal is meant to make that smoother, with proper passenger processing at the quay.

For independent travellers, the practical effect is crowds. When several ships dock together, the heritage core fills up fast. Expect busier mornings around Jonker Walk and the Stadthuys on those days.

Planning ahead

None of this affects a trip you book today. The terminal is still under construction, and the 2028 timeline depends on the piling and jetty works staying on schedule.

If you want to see the sea side of Melaka’s story in the meantime, the Maritime Museum tells the tale of the port’s trading past inside a replica Portuguese galleon. The Melaka River Cruise is the easiest way to see the waterfront from the water. For getting around once you arrive, start with our Melaka travel guides.
