Most visitors never leave the heritage core. A small boat in the north of the state is giving them a reason to.
A river some call Melaka’s “Mini Amazon”
The Eco-Cruise Paya Lebar runs on the Paya Lebar river in Ayer Limau, near Masjid Tanah. Some locals have started calling the waterway a “Mini Amazon” for Melaka.
The nickname comes from the wildlife. Tourists from China, Singapore, Egypt, Spain, Hungary and the United Kingdom have taken the cruise, and several rated it five stars after seeing the river’s flora and fauna up close.
What you can expect to see
The main draw is crocodiles. One boat operator says passengers most love watching them swim or bask on the riverbank. Crocodiles estimated at more than 500kg have passed right beside the boat.
You can also expect snakes and other reptiles along the banks. The river has long been described as a habitat for crocodiles and fireflies, with reports putting the crocodile count at nearly 1,400.
The practical details
- Price: RM50 per person, as quoted by the operator.
- Boat size: up to 12 passengers.
- Duration: about two hours.
- Departure point: Paya Lebar Jetty in Masjid Tanah.
Boats can sometimes make two trips in a day. Check conditions and availability with the operator before you drive out, since river cruises depend on the weather and tide.
Pair it with a day in the north
Paya Lebar is a different Melaka from the one on most itineraries. It suits travellers who have done the Stadthuys and Jonker Walk and want something wilder.
If you want a gentler river outing in town, the Melaka River Cruise runs through the heritage centre. Families who want a guaranteed crocodile encounter can also visit Melaka Crocodile and Recreation Park.
Paya Lebar’s Eco Cruise Sungai Linggi was one of three river products offered free on National Day, as covered in our earlier report. Most visitors arrive by car, so our driving guide is worth a read before you go.
